Green Features of
Tomahawk Demonstration Project

The active solar system. The lower left shows a portion of the solar electric PV system. The upper right shows most of the solar hot-water system.

Energy

  1. Passive solar design: indirect gain w/ solarium and water storage tank
  2. Small home size (1150 Sq.Ft. plus 200 Sq. Ft. greenhouse)
  3. Solar hot-water: water heating system [40 sf]
  4. Solar electricity: PV system (solar electric)
  5. Insulation: blown in cellulose - R-30 walls; R-54 ceiling, R-33 floors
  6. Energy Star appliances:
    refridgerator, dish-washer, clothes washer
  7. Energy Star lighting fixtures:
    w/ CF bulbs—over 70% of fixtures
  8. Energy performance monitoring system:
    - kWh produced, imported, exported & consumed
    - kWh consumed by major appliance with data logger
  9. EPA rated low emission fireplace: sealed combustion wood burning fireplace.
  10. Furnace: Solar assisted Lifebreath hydronic forced air furnace
  11. Heating ducts: located  in conditioned space
  12. HRV system: Lifebreath Heat Recovery Ventilator

The stair treads, risers, and railings are all examples of reclaimed wood.

Materials

  1. SFC certified sustainably harvested wood
    - double staggered advanced framed 2x4 stud wall system
    - spruce siding
  2. Renewable flooring:
    - cork on lower floor
    - bamboo on upper floor
    - tile floors
  3. Reclaimed wood:
    - greenhouse structure
    - stair treads, risers and railings,
    - interior trim (base, door trim, window sills)
  4. FSC certified countertops: paperstone
  5. Engineered wood: floor and roof structure
  6. Sustainably-harvested wood windows and doors [Sierra Pacific]
  7. Cabinets: sustainably harvested forest products/ engineered wood.
  8. Low/No VOC paints/stains: interior walls and exterior siding

The upper greenhouse provides excellent opportunities for fresh herbs, quick salad and cooking vegetables year around.

Water Conservation, Gardening, & Transportation

  1. Dual flush toilet
  2. Integrated storm-water management: rainwater capture/harvesting to on-site irrigation system
  3. Roof garden
  4. Greenhouse: 2-story 200 sf
  5. Neighborhood served by public transit; walking distance to commercial services
